The Ora Ring has all the potential to be the best sleep tracker on the market and here is why!
I have been tracking my sleep with various products since the day my health forced me to take my sleep (or lack of it) seriously a little over 7 years ago. Getting a great nights sleep and understanding how much sleep your body needs can be tough to identify and track, but it doesn't have to be.
Over the years I have tried several different approaches to measuring and quantifying my sleep. The best two products I have used to date are the Fitbit Charge (my current sleep tracker) and the Sleep Cycle App. The Oura Ring, however, makes all the promises to render these two solutions out of date and obsolete.
1. The Oura ring offers unparalleled convenience.
The Oura Ring (not entirely unlike the Fitbit Charge) offers automatic sleep tracking, water resistance, durability and long battery life in a sleek and stylish ring that doesn't draw unwanted attention. All you have to do is live your life while it does the work of tracking your sleep stages, resting heart rate, heart rate variability and body temperature!
What about CrossFit? It is not recommended to wear the ring while lifting weights! So this does re-introduce the wedding band issue I solved with the Qalo ring.
2.The Oura ring provides the ultimate sleep schedule by helping you align your sleep cycle to your unique circadian rhythm.
The book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel Pink covers the importance of understanding your chronotype or how your natural propensity for sleep impacts your performance and attitude throughout the day. The Oura Ring is the first consumer wearable to track and provide guidance on how to align your sleep schedule with your unique circadian rhythm which could lead to better performance in all areas of your life. 3. The Oura ring tracks menstrual periods, metabolic rate and sickness with Body Temperature Monitoring.
The Oura Ring offers body temperature sensor which establishes a baseline body temperature and then tracks any deviations in body temperature. Monitoring your body temperature has the potential of helping women track menstrual periods, measure metabolic rate and can act as an early indicator of when you might be getting sick allowing you to take preventative measures!
4. The Oura ring provides elite athlete tracking in a consumer wearable.
The Oura Ring offers Heart Rate Variability (HRV) monitoring. HRV has been popular with distance athletes for years. Elite athletes use HRV to measure the impact of the previous days training session to assess "readiness" for the days training regime. Based on this HRV score they may adjust their intensity up or down to align with their HRV measurements. The tech, however, has always been cumbersome, obtrusive and expensive. With the Oura Ring, you can now track HRV with a fantastic level of accuracy without clunky tech or additional steps in your daily routine.
5. The Oura ring offers a better measure of health with an overall "Readiness" score.
Train hard and get a miserable nights sleep? Oura knows! The Oura ring uses its combination of metrics such as body temperature, sleep, resting heart rate, etc. to provide you with an overall score that helps measures "Readiness." The "Readiness" score provides guidance about the level of activity your body is "ready" to take on for the day by accounting for your activity metrics and sleep metrics. Learn more...
I have no idea when I will get my ring, but I am excited and filled with high expectations for this product. The company has done a great job keeping me up to date with informative pre-informs that just make me anxious about my new tracker.
What do you think about the Oura Ring and what it might offer to anyone tracking their health and fitness?
